list of corals resident within MTRC / middle TN

Is there or has there ever been a list of corals resident in the tanks of MTRC members? When I look for frags I would like to purchase locally if possible. Also when I look to purchase a frag pack I would prefer to purchase frags not already owned by a MTRC member with the intention of sharring when it grows out. Would anyone else be interested in a coral registry of sorts?? I do not know that it would have to be limited to MTRC members as much as by geograph...i.e. 1hr radious of nashville or something?

a penny (on credit) for your thoughts

That's something good to Go on our club website(forums). I was thing about the same thing last week. My list is long over 50 sps, 20 LPS and some zoas. But some are not big eough to frag.
Ok now you owe me a penny. Lol

should it be MTRC only or more geography based?
does MTRC.org support spread sheets?
what would a reasonable taxonomy look like?

I don't know that something Andy have to answer. I wouldn't put it on here rc your pm box would be full all the time.

for sure that is something I would love to see happen I know there are a couple frags in my tank Im not completely sure what they are, so I would have to depend on you guys or the internet to identify

I like the idea of a club list. We are commited to helping one another, and it is after all a club site :-) Others could certainly view it, but I would like to keep it vendor free and avoid spam from online vendors. Just my thoughts.

So how can we get this started, do we just need to start submitting our lists to one of the club board members ?

I would definitly defer to the IT gurus, but it seems like the first step would be to determine a taxonomy and desired fields. I think the user being able to populate the list might save one person a lot of work. Just my thoughts

That is a cool idea. My question is will it be viewable by non club members? Not a big deal really, I just personally would just want to know if I would look at a list or continue posting threads looking for local stuff on RC. I am going marine planted anyhow with my upgrade, so I am not going to be looking for corals for a long time, that said it might be cool to include a macro algae and marine plants section too.

As far as taxonomy, I would list it in a general manner:
i.e.
Acropora sp.
Zoanthus. sp.
Protopalythoa sp.
Acanthastrea sp.

Etc... with trade names listed for each type within the category.

I agreee with adrian as for the taxonomy. using the trade names is easiest for those of us who suck at remembering names is the easiest way. that said, there are some variations of them as well. I know a pink birdsnest I used to have was different from other pink birdsnests.

In excel we can see it all in the raw data form. having photos along with would help as well, but can prove to be a daunting task.

I will look into it, but my initial idea is for using something of an online catalog that members can post to.

As for Adrians question, yes, it will be publicly viewable. Just need to be a club member to list it perhaps. There are a few classified as well as shopping/catalog packages out there we can use that index the entries.

The question I have is this something the club members may be willing to spend a little money on?

That sounds like a good idea Andy. Another question is: Will it be possible for there to be some sort of non member submissions via you or another member. Some locals may have lots of stuff that isn't necessarily being "circulated" among club members. Just an idea, or fail safe in the off chance that a someone might lose a coral that no other members have. I for one would be glad to help someone get a frag of something if they didn't have it or just wanted one.

I would spend some $$$ if it made life significantly easier for the webmaster and provided a good interface. If we could do the same for free then I would rather not, but I trust your judgement.

Well, free stuff often flakes short....good news is we are not talking a lot of money.

There are certain features that are important to this:

-quantity available
-price
-pay pal link for the seller
-thumbnail
-Full photo

These are key to a good experience IMO.

a wiki is a great idea. that should be very cheap and easy to impliment.

just a though and i would not wait on this, but what if.......
someone like RC hosted a wiki where all the reef club members around the world could enter there corals? This would allow banking of rare corals outside a geographic region. I read an article on banking or backing up corals in one of the free mags at the critter and it was intriging.
