Lithium question

I recently saw where you had concerns about Coralife Salt Mix due to high lithium contents. I know that test is about 5 years old and I am trying to contact the manufacturer to find out if they have changed their formula since then.

I recently switched back to Coralife from IO. My LFS swears by the stuff and its the only brand he sells. I used it a couple of years ago but wasn't doing much testing then. I now have a log thats been going for about 9 months now and I test once a week. It'll be interesting to see how the numbers change over the course of time.

Anyway, to the question. Do you know what affect high lithium has on our fish ?

I really like the added calcium and magnesium I get with Coralife and will be monitoring my test results in the next month to see what changes take place. If I get a reply from the manufacturer I will post back with their reply.

No, I don't. A number of years ago, folks had problems keeping certain inverts with Coralife salt. Larry Jackson lost one or more starfish after doing a small water change with some Coralife salt, IIRC,and some folks blamed it on the lithium. But I've not seen (but have not really looked in detail) for info on lithium toxicity to marine inverts.

Thanks Randy. I mixed up a batch of Coralife to do a water change this weekend and here's what the water tested.

Calcium 560
Alk 10dkh
Mag 1300

This was at 1.023 @ 78 deg

I don't need that much calcium as I have a FO. I think I'll go back to IO. Maybe I'll mix IO and what Coralife I have left 50/50 until I use it up.

If I have one good thing to say about Coralife is it dissolves much faster then IO.

I have used that salt and I have had no problems with it.I have a bucket of it thats pretty full.

That is pretty high. They may share the Oceanic philosophy that if some calcium and magnesium is good, more is better.
