Little Giant Users?

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a Little Giant 4-MDQX-SC. It sounds like an outboard boat engine.

I piped it with 1.5" spaflex from the sump and 1.5" to the tank.

Is this just a noisy pump or is something wrong?

One of my friends bought the same pump last summer for his 150gal on the 2nd floor. You could hear it hum in the basement!

We brought it back to the LFS and got the CoraLife 1270. After 4 months the flow dropped to a trickle as the motor got really hot. Took it apart, no obstructions or anything caught in the impeller, the magnetic coupling of the motor spun freely. Now he's got the PoseidonPS4/VelocityT4 and so far so quiet.

I heard that adding oil will quite it down but can't tell you how much.

They are pretty noisy. Had one on a tank with the sump underneath. I ended up replacing it with an Iwaki. The Poseidon is dead quiet but they utilize the water flowing through them to cool the motor as opposed to the fan that is built into other pumps therefore, the poseidon adds a bit of heat to the tank, this is the "cost" of a very quiet pump.

I have a 4md-sc. When I lived in an apartment I disconnected it and used a QuietOne from Rainbow Lifeguard. Little Giant pumps are not quiet but if yours sounds like an outboard engine there may be something wrong with it. Worst thing about them is that infernal hum.

I have mine plumbed in the basement so I can't hear it unless I'm near the sump. My tank sits five feet from it, on the other side of the wall, in the Den.

Good luck.
