Ive been looking for information about vendors and have seen toms caribbean tropicals and Live Aquaria. Do people have fairly good luck finding healthy, young specimens from these suppliers? It'd be a bit of a bummer to spend money on buying the octopus plus shipping for an octopus thats already a year old.

From what I've been reading on tonmo it's always going to be a gamble. If you can get a male then your chances are a bit better. It sounds like liveaquaria's guarantee will cover octos so that would be good but I think Tom is pretty good about working with you to.
Do you already have a tank built for one? I'm currently building an octo tank so I'd love to hear what you're doing.

+1 for it being a bummer when it turns out that your newly purchased octo is in fact in its terminal phase of life. I got a female once at an LFS that promptly laid eggs within the first week and then withered.

Did you have any success with the babies?
Well it was a large egg species, so I was able to observe embryonic development which was cool. The setup was a full reef, so there was no real way to get the hatchlings out. In the end none of them made it. It was still very interesting to see the maternal behavior (egg guarding/tending) and embryonic development.
Fortuitously, the female laid her eggs in the back corner of the tank and thus I was able to watch the whole thing...it was a pretty long process... several weeks if I remember correctly.
