Live Blackworms?

Are you close to a 'Pet Club'? Mine carries live black worms. They mistakenly have them labeled tubiflex, but I think they are really black worms.

All my fish turn into Piranha when there are BW in the tank. :) They are just about the only thing my Discus will eat.

I got some from King aquarium (call before going). $2 for a scoop. I did rodi water change once a week and not a single dead worm in 4 weeks. other places charge double or triple that.

guessing a scoop is more than an oz like below? I havent been to King in years so I should go check it out anyways. They tore down that huge reef a while ago right?

I want worms as well, however, apparently black worms are hard to maintain and reproduce. I have been looking into getting white worms which are easier to grow.

For Black worms:
Aqua lab aquaria

California Black worms: $7.99/oz or $4.99/half ounce

Interesting...I have been there before but didnt understand their setup at all.

1 scoop is half ounce. I'd say the scoop size is maybe 1/4 cup.

notice King's 1/2 oz is $2, vs Aqua lab of $5, and they never had it whenever I go there or call. just a waste of time.

at $2 a scoop, you do not need to breed/raise them. just buy more as needed. I just keep it in a container with holes on the cover (and clearly marked fish food) in the refrigerator, and replace the rodi water once a week, no feeding. most google search will tell you do replace the water every day, to feed it , etc, etc, which I think is all unnecessary.

also blackworms are freshwater worms and dies within 10-15 seconds in saltwater. as such it is not a natural food for any marine fish. and not all fish will be interested in it. so I think the piranha feeding frenzy is not quite accurate. in fact when I first dropped some blackworms into the tank, all fish freaked out and went into hiding. it's like I have a fishless tank for like 20 minutes. also, when you google how to raise/breed, you will find one that feeds the worms cardboard/newspaper. I don't see how these worms can be highly nutritious if all they eat is cardboard.

yeah Im only planning on getting my new wrasse to eat but interested in seeing if my other fish will like them. Thanks for the info!

19 miles one way to aquatic collection, so 38 miles total for me. That’s approximately $10 in gas money and 2 hours of my time. That’s why I am interested in having a self sustaining source of worms. If I had a local source I would by them as Doughboy mentioned. Whenever I am in the willow glen area I stop by Aqua Lab Aquaria, but they’re usually closed. Does anybody know of a place selling worms in the Mountain View area?

I think someone here recently mentioned he buys 1 lb at a time (for about $50 if I remember correctly), probably from the blackworm farm in fresno.
if you refrigerate them, they are essentially dormant, and should really not need to be fed or generate too much ammonia.
your other option is to get the freeze dried version. same farm in fresno sells them (amazon, ebay or direct from their website).

There's a freshwater store in SF, I think it's called Ocean Aquarium. They've got live Ca. black worms. I believe AC has tubifex

Aquatic collection only carries tubifex, but not all the time. And I would call ahead before schlepping out to Lab Aquaria.

I f wonder if a Wrasse would be interested in black worms? They are kinda big. Have you tried live pods ? Or tigger pods?

Wrasses (in general) love them.

King has tubiflex. Not black worms.

I purchased black worms in bulk from the farm in Fresno. I fed them flake food soaked in selcon and other additives.

Kept them for close to 5 months before I ran out.

My fish loves them. Chasing them and eating them before they died. Got my copperband to eat them then transitioned him to frozen. Had him eventually eating from my hand.
