live mussels, scallops and clams

These are usually available live at the grocery store, would it be beneficial to use them in a sump or refugium for addition filtration?
 
Not a good idea. Animals that are to be eaten are often not designed for long term life in a tank. You run the risk of getting something that may take over the tank or worse die and kill off everything else.
 
Clams filter particulates out of the water and turn it into pee (ammonium). If you have an excess of suspended particulates or a lack of nitrate, then they will solve your problem.
