live mysid shrimp

Hi,

I am from abroad and I need some live mysid shrimp to feed my seahorses. Where I live there is no other than live brine. A friend of mine who lives in Fort Lauderdale kindly agreed to pick up some for me, but he has no idea where. If someone be so kind and point me to a LFS in the area which sells live mysids and are able to pack them appropiately so they can survive a 6-8 hours piggyback flight.

Thank you.
Matt

Armando, you mean Atlantis Exotic in Pembroke? Unfortunately the person who is helping me can only move around Ft. Lauderdale.

I plan to use Mysids as a starter culture to feed seahorse juvies/adults. They don't exceed 1/4'' as adults and have a good nutritional profile when enriched, according to literature. Ghosts are FW and too big in MO. Any more helpful hints? I have until tomorrow to source down, then time's up for departure.

well, i have been to every fish store in Ft Lauderdale and almost everyone in he surrounding area, i have never seen anybody selling mysid shrimp. i know of a place to get live copopods, but they are really small. if you want to know where, pm me cause i work for the store but can't say it on here because i would be "advertising", but i think your best bet would be to use brine shrimp and then when the seahorses are a little bigger give them some smaller ghost shrimp. you would be suprised what a seahorse can eat.

I have two seahorses and looked everywhere in Miami and Fort Lauderdale for live mysis and had no luck. I purchased some online, but found that it would cost me too much to continue doing that. I bought the ghost shrimp at Atlantis in Miami and at first thought they were too big for my horses. They placed some in their seahorse tank and they ate them up. I tried some with mine and had the same success. I have an adult horse and a smaller juvie and they can both eat them. Good thing now is that they are both eating frozen.

Thank you all for your help. I guess REED should be the place to go, but on another occation. Meanwhile I will give a try on some ghosts.

Yes, I had also Sachs in mind, but time being so short, today is holiday, right?, even with overnight shipping would have been a hit and miss story. Definitely not in the mood to challenge Murphy's law.

Just curious, but have you tried feeding them frozen mysis? Since seahorses are protected by cites and the only ones we find are tank raised, we feed them frozen mysys and they eat it willingly.

Give it a shot, I'll bet they'll take right to it.

I was speaking with the owner of Exotic Aquatic and he actually just ordered some. They are a different type though then we see froozen, they are ment to be a little larger...also they are not cheap! they are about 1$ each! I believe they come from reef nutrition...not sure though

hey bret, i have already pm'd him about it and i think a friend of his is going there on wed if they have the pods and shrimp by then.

pdavies, actually I have my first batch of 7 week old ponies raised from birth. I plan to wean them first on small live mysid larvae, then gradually integrating fresh dead ones, and finally frozen. But to accomplish this I must setup a little culture station. Or maybe it's easier to setup up a peppermint farm.

whaler1582 were did you find live copepods for sale in the area, i might get some to boost my mandarins supply.

They sell them at Exotic Aquatic on Oakland Park east. They are around 20$ for a bottle. If you get some Cheato from any of the members here though, thats usually loaded with pods aswell!

i was lookin into raising mysid, but the problem is they are cannabils. i guess thats the reason you rarely see them for sale

I have a bunch in my refugium. I started with about 5-10 several months ago and now there are tons of little ones running all the over glass, rock and macros!!
