Live Rock and Tanks

Hey guys,

New the hobby here.

I am looking for tall tanks. I really would like to find a 65 column. I'm starting with a 20g Odyssea, reef only. I also have a 50 tall that I am not sure if I am going to use. It has a crack on one side, (from bottom to top), though the previous owner has reinforced it with a pc of mirror. I have not filled it up to test for leaks. Since I would like to be able to have a this space see through, I am going to try to seal a new pc of glass in its place.

In the meantime, I'd like to add more live rock to my 20g. I prefer carribean rock vs fiji, but I will take whatever CURED rock I can find.

I live in Southside (near UAB and former Healthsouth).

Thanks,

Mark,

I am all ears. My tank is currently sitting on my back deck, which is only accessable through my house. I just coated my wood floors with polyu, so i won't be able to get to my tank for a couple of days. that being said, i am not even sure if the replacement glass i got from the reptile dept. at work is of correct width. Its just been a crazy week.

Ok, to do it well you must get the old piece of glass out. My last repair was on a 100 gallon with 3/8 " thick glass. It may take several hits with a hammer to get it out. When you get your replacement piece of glass (I use Nelson Glass on southside) make sure you measure well and get it 3/16 to 1/8 " less than actual. Clean all sides with a razorblade and then with rubbing alcohol. Let dry, apply a bead of silicone before glass, then install piece and silicone into place.

A repair job should be put inside the tank, measured in well and siliconed like crazy. Doesn't look pretty but should work. If you need help let me know and I'll see if I can get a free minute.

Yes, I called Nelson the day after I purchased the tank, and gave them a rough measurement. For 1/4 in, the estimated cost is $35. Not bad, I thought. I think I am going to try the piece from work. I don't know if Nelson will cut it for me, and if not, I will see what Home Depot can do.

Installation sounds easier than it probably is.

Thanks and I will give it a try. I picked up a 55g at a yardsale this morning. I don't know, but I just prefer the tall tanks, so I really hope this repair works.

I use Cassidy and Self on 4th Ave South, their prices tend to be a little cheaper than Nelson Glass...also the guy that cuts for them does a really good job...just make sure you tell them at the desk its for an aquarium, it'll be cut perferctly.

What size piece of glass are you needing? If you only need 1/4" glass I may have it, depending on the dimensions. Just let me know. I'll be out the rest of the day, replacing gutters sucks, but I'll check back this evening.
