Hey, I'm planning my first large tank build ( 180) and I'm wondering if it's alright to mix live rock with fake coral. Bit of a naive question, but I just want to make sure.
it's Ok, but you'll need to clean and bleach the fake corals every month or two to keep the growth off them. otherwise they'll be covered like the rocks in a few months.
you are not going to want fake coral taking up room in your tank,, fake coral is for lazy people who don't want to have to worry about live coral,, but the fact is that its not even hard to take of a reef,, esp a 180 gallon one

If youre worried about keeping em alive, Id start with some softies. Theyre pretty easy to keep alive, and will probably be cheaper than fake corals in the long run (once they grow). I think once you get further into the hobby, you will end up ditching the fake corals for live ones in the long run. Unless youre going for a FOWLR tank, and dont want them to be eaten, then like Rick said, just bleach em every couple months.

You'll want to be careful when selecting your fake corals as the constant cleaning can quickly remove any paint or coloration of some fake corals. You will have to clean them frequently to keep them looking good so durability is a must.
