Live rock in 5 gallon bucket okay for cycle?

Hey guys there's someone that just tore down a tank and is selling live rock in a 5 gallon bucket for real cheap. Is it okay to use for a new tank if it's been out of water for a week or two?

It will need to be cycled one way or the other. It depends on livestock in the new tank and at what stage the new tank is in the cycling process. I wouldn't just throw that into an established tank as there will be die off on it. If the tank is new with nothing in it then you could put it in and cycle it with the tank.

Hey Jolly - Im a newbie myself...you'd need to have a good sense of trust this individual
kept the rock wet and warm for the duration...

I agree if you have no livestock in the tank then you can place it in the tank. I would probably give it a rinse and scrub either way. Good luck

It depends do you have any fish already? If yes I would cure it in a separate tank or container, make sure to put a heater and a pump to move the water around, don't forget to do water changes

Actually turns out this rock is in water with powerhead and light from established reef tank (2 years old). So fingers crossed for little to no cycle for new tank

Ok than that's good, just make sure you test your water weekly and if needed do a water change to keep your parameters in check.
