live rock in bucket?

Depends what's on it. ;) Sponges require food, coralline requires calcium, but what I think your asking is how long with the filtering bacteria stay alive, which I would say, a good bit, as long as you drop a pellet in there from time to time.

Do a search on "cooking live rock" - some people are starting to be huge proponents of this - keeping rock circulated at the right salenity for a prolonged period to rid it of detritis. High flow and water changes are important from what I understand, but it makes the rock nicer when you're ready for it.

I did it for about 6 months once in a big tub. No light needed unless you've got hitchhikers you want to save (zoas, shrooms, etc)

You should keep a heater in with it, if it's not in the house. Other than that, it should last for a very long time as long as there is good flow. Drastic temp swings may cause the bacteria some problems if you don't use a heater though.

Good advice. I'd also make sure to keep the salinity at somewhere around what you'd keep an aquarium at...
