Live Rock/Non-Live rock...

Considering I will be doing things the right way and cycling my tank, would it not be possible to use some non live rock mixed in with live rock? Will the non-live rock be "live" by the time the tank is cycled?

Starting a 120g tank and trying to save a bit of money. I have heard good things about Premium Aquatics and was looking at the Reef Saver/Live rock combo option.

Assuming this would be okay, what ratio would you all recommend?

Yes, a mix of live and dead rock is often used to start a tank. 1 pound live to 3 pounds dead gives you good diversity while saving money.

I did 5lbs premium and 5lbs plain live rock. The premium is already seeding the plain stuff. It is a good way to go

Thanks for the replies. I think I will go in this direction. I am not trying to be cheap overall, just cheap where it doesn't make a difference (so I have more to spend on where it DOES)!

Dry Rock / Live Rock

Dry Rock / Live Rock

Greeting's:
When I started my recent tank, I used BRS "Pukani" dry rock, and then added live bio active sand to kick things off. Its been about 3 months now and I have to say things are working out wonderful. Using the dry rock from BRS came in all different sizes and shapes, and also they are more than willing to work with you to get the size or shape of rock your looking for. It also saved me a bundle! Hope my two cents helps!

Where do you get said sand?

Also what do you all estimate in amount of rock I need for a 125 gallon (4ft wide version)

Time is the only difference. Base rock will become live, its just a matter of time. If you have patience you can save a lot of money in this hobby! Easier said then done though!
