almost any rock can become live....but it really takes about a year. It will get coraline but it wont have all the pods/tube worms etc till it has been in there a year. In my tank I have quite a bit of lace rock. It did not get to what I consider live till about 2 years after I put it in the tank. Sure it got the algae sooner, but not what really makes live rock live rock. It will have the same bacteria and stuff rather quickly though if your just loooking for filtration.
good idea.. just mix live rock with base rock, and let the rest of your tank grow and your live rock will 'grow' too (in terms of bacteria, pods, etc).. live sand works fine too to 'seed' base/tufa rock, etc.
