Live rock question

I have heard of some aquarists using live rock to initially cycle the display aquarium. I have read of two methods of doing the cycling. One method involves using your Lighting as you normally would when aquarium is fully stocked. The other method encourages no lighting at all. In your opinion, which method have you found to be more beneficial, and why? thanks in advance, I'm finally filling my 180, live rock this weekend, just a curiousity question.

I am currently setting up a 120 and cured 100 lbs of live rock with no lighting. I just added sand yesterday. So far the cycle has been going well. The nice thing is I haven't had to fight a diatom bloom. Hope that is helpful.

i agree with no lighting, Any nuisance algae that may be on the rocks will die of with no lighting
