Live Rock/Second Cycle question

Hello everyone,

I have 25 lbs of Tonga LR in my setup now, but it requires much much more.

Its a 92 Gallon tank, so I'm going to be adding about 90-110lbs of LR right away, will this cause the cycle to start all over again?

There is currently nothing in the tank but the LR, and a few hermits and snails, so if it re-cycles it means nothing but more patience before adding anything to the tank.

depends on the rock......
Is it wet? dry? old? new? etc etc.....
Depending on that, you will see a small spike or a large spike....or non at all

Adding in 4 times the amount of LR rock you currently have will cause a cycle even if it's fully curred rock. You'll have die off transporting to your tank. Depending on the quality of the rock and how long it take to transport will determine the size of your spike and length of the cycle. Keep up with water changes and monitor ammonia so the spike does not kill your clean-up crew.

Yes it has to travel quite the distance, and a lot of die off is probably. It will be travelling a total of about 10 hours before making it into my tank.

The drive is only 7 hours, but 10 allows time for slight delays and such.

I live 500 miles away from my nearest lfs, so only when I make trips into this city do I get any new additions for my tank.

Thanks for the answers!

Can you bring one or two rubbermaid tubs of salt water to transport the rock in? I'd imagine that this would cut down on die off. "Swish" the rock real good in the tubs before putting it in your tank. A lot of detritus will fall off.
