Live rock with bio balls

I know this might not be the place for this question since i have a fish only tank but i have a 90 gallon tank with about 100 lbs of live rock. do i need the bio ball still in my filter or can i remove them a little at a time with no problems

If you remove them, take them out slowly, or you params will go nuts. You do not need them if you have a good skimmer, your rock will provide your bio filtration. I would add some more LR though, I like to keep 1 1/2-2 lbs per gallon and the skimmer to remove excess. What kind of skimmer do you have?

It depends on your bioload. What do you have in the 90 gallon tank?

If you anticipate that your bioload is going up, may be your fish will potentially grow large, then keep the bioball.

If not, remove them slowly in the course of a few months.

i have a proclear mps 150 protien skimmer.as far as fish i have a naso tang, a 6-8 in brown banded shark, 8-10 in banded eel, and my 6in puffer just died for some strange reason and the rest of the fish are ok. i just put in another 2 in puffer. very cute. tiny.

I think you should keep your bioballs. The naso alone can be a lot of bioload in a few years.

WOW! Thats a heavy bio load for a 90. What are you params?

i havent checked my levels in a while. i was checking them every week and everything was fine every time. so i just change 5-10 gallons of water a week and dont have a problem. the reason i want to get rid of the bio balls is so i can ditch the filter pad on my proclear sump and change to to a hang on sock so i dont have to worry so much about the tank over flowing. i change the filter pad every 24 hours. at least with the if i miss changing it by a few hours i dont have to worry about it over flowing.
