quick question if i just take my live rock and put it in fresh water will that kill everything? including algae? then after that can i put it in a tank with just saltwater and let that soak in there for a few days before putting it back into my main tank? i have no corals but tons of algae so i don't care if everything dies off just as long as the algae won't come back =(

Since you have no corals shut the lights off and do water changes to get your nutrients down. Algea needs to photosynthesize so no light and no food should kill it. Dipping the rock quickly would not do anything to kill the algea and might hurt life that you do want in your tank. IMO.

Do you use Tap water or RO water? How long do you have your lights on for? Are you over-feeding?

Turn your lights off completely and do a water change. Your algae should be gone within a week to a week and a half. Then turn your lights on and slowly work your way up to having your lights on all day. Use RO water and not tap water and don;t over-feed. Also do you have any snails? Turbo and naussarius snails are great for shifting the sand bed and eating algae.

+1

Keep the lights off. If there is a window near by or you have lights on in the room that the tank is in then cover it with a sheet. Do several partial water changes and use good clean ro water with low tds for topoff. You should be able to clear it up in a week or two. A phosban reactor isnt a bad idea either.

Good thing you dont have any inhabitants or it would be much more difficult.
