Live Rock

Hello all

Some of you may have seen my other thread about coming home to Memphis.

Can you give me some insight regarding prices for live rock down there? It'll help me make a decision as to what to do with ~60-70 lbs of rock I have in an extra tank.

As it will probably be awhile before I setup another tank, I was considering selling it, but if it's going to cost me a bunch to rebuild it, I may just let it dry out and reseed later.

Thanks!
Ryan

On another forum, I've heard of issues getting Fiji rock in right now (not CITES compliant or something). One of the vendors on that forum has a couple hundred pounds at the airport, but they won't release it. This could clear up soon, though.

Just wrap each piece up in wet newspaper, place it in a plastic bag inside a Styrofoam box, seal the box and bring it/ship it to Memphis. That would be a lot better 'n drying it out. A lot cheaper 'n buying new and compared to the way live rock arrives in the US it would be like a first class seat on the Concord.

Dry rock prices , and live rock prices are two very different things.

You can get dry rock for $1.50-$2/lbs.

Granted you could use one of the seedling products , but I imagine you will lose some of the variety of life that comes living on live rock.

You're right about losing the diversity, but it'll also give me an opportunity to deal with some problem rock

Recently picked up a bunch of free LR that I knew had some aiptasia and majano problems. Some of the rock in one of my nano's also had some bryopsis. I believe that these issues should go away if I let the rock dry out in the good 'ol memphis summer.

When I get ready to use it again, I'll get some premium rock to cycle with it before the tank(s) go up.

I would sell it before I let it dry out.

You could sell the live rock as is and then start with "fresh baserock and some good premium live rock" when you are ready to restart and you would come on better on the $ end of it all.

Couple of questions - Was going to put a bunch of LR into a tub (wet) pending move - I haven't decided if I'll sell, dry or pack it wet for the move, so for now I was going to consolidate and place into a tub.

I have read various threads about rubbermaid tubs and possibly leaching phosphates that leaves me concerned.

Has anyone actually tested before and after effects of using rubbermaid tubs? I don't want to go with lookdown type of tub, need something with lid and not crazy expensive.

Food grade is what I'm looking for, right? Materials (if listed ) to stay away from?

If they (rubbermaid) do leach phos, I would guess it would be over a period of time, right? Would I be ok if we're only talking 6 or so weeks?

Related question, does drying out rock have any effect on phospate which may have saturated / permeated LR?

Recommendations for phos removal whilst "cooking" or reseeding dry? I will skim, water change and run phos reactors.

Any recommendations for other storage containers would be welcome (besides your tanks :)).

Thanks in advance
