Live Rocks?

Can these rocks be used as Live Rock? I live next to the beach and they are all along in the sand and grass. Some people use them as yard decorations. They have no life on them, Which is illegal to take in Hawaii. I wanted to get some LR but I havent seen anyone who will ship here because of the laws of importing foreign species. It looks like what I see online but I wasnt sure. If it is, I plan to boil it to make sure it is free of any microorganisms.

It looks to me like they are base rock right now... but if you seed with LR eventually they will be Live rock.

what do you mean by seed? Put some LR in the tank by it? I am wondering that too saltsy, how long does it take for dead rock or base to become alive?

base rock will take about 6 monthes to get covered in coraline and look like LR. seeding means to add LR to base rock and in time the critters from the LR will start to inhabant the base rock

once the critters inhabit the BR, is it then considered LR or is it always going to be BR?

It will be LR. The life on the rock makes it LR:D

Set up a separate tank or rubber maid container, if you have room, and put a nice powerful light on it with good circulation. Tie it to your main system. Make sure sure there are no fish (predation), just hermits or snails to keep the algea down. After a few months the rock should be teeming with life and look pretty good and ready for your tank. I have done that a couple times to keep my costs down. If you use a shallow rubber maid container, you can get away with vho and get exceptional growth.

im not sure... I know here in Hawaii, LR is illegal to buy or take from the ocean and base rock can be hard to come by. Thats why I have to scan the shore for legal rocks, or pay big bucks at the LFS. To have a reef tank here is tricky.

Wanted to jump in on this question. springer275 you said to tie in to your main system that means use same sump and filtering as a established tank? I have almost 300 lbs of fuji live rock that has not seem water in 6 months or more. Just picked up last week end at a estate clean out. I was going to set up other tank and seed it, is it ok to mix with my reef of almost a year now?

I wouldn't. There would be a mass amount of ammonia that would come off of it, the start of the curing process. And it may mess with all of your corals and whatnot. I wouldn't add them in there yet. Cycle it in a different tank or container, watch the levels carefully and then when everything checks out, add it in slowly.

Why dont you just make your own rock.I have around 20 pounds on home made rock in my tank.It will cost you aroub 15 cents a pound to make.

Depending on what i have ill use either southdown sand or crushed oyster shells.I mix 1 part type 3 portland cement and 5 parts of the the southdown or oyster shells.Ive got an old 10 gallon tank i use to make my molds in.I also make frag plugs as well just like these
