Does anyone local have any live sand for sale cheep? I'm looking for small grain from an established reef - about 0.1mm or smaller than 0.2? I'm looking to fill a space 18x24 4"-5"deep. Does anyone know how many pounds of sand that takes? Thanks.

It would take almost (2) 5 gallon buckets of sand to fill to 5". Not sure what that equates to in poundage.

If I had to guess I would say 70-75 lbs, 5 gallons of saltwater weighs 42.5 lbs. Also the reason I say you need that much is based on the volume of water needed to fill that space is 9.3 gallons, you can do the math from that.

So I picked up the craigslist sand... its pretty good! Needed to be washed big time!!! (Salt water wash of course ;)). Anyway, I'm about 20-30lbs shy so hit me up if anyone out there has some for sale okay?

Good question.... the guy said 80lbs in his craigslist post. then he emailed me saying he weighed it at 120. It was one 5 gallon at 1/2 full and one 5 gallon at 2/3 full. It filled the space about 3" deep. I have no idea how much it weighs though. I can say that I couldn't comfortably curl either bucket, and I can comfortably curl 30lbs, so the small bucket weighed more than 30lbs... I would guess about 35lbs. So I'm thinking you were right on Rock with 70-75lbs per 5 gallon bucket.

It was perfect texture though! I'm doing a Deep Sand Bed filter so I'm looking for mud. And it was from a reef tank so I dont have to fret copper, etc.

Hey Brian,

I just wanted to let you know that I weighed that sand and the lighter of the two buckets was right at 60 pounds and the other was right at 68. I knocked off eight pounds for the buckets and water. That's where I got the 120 pounds from.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear it is working out for you. Sorry about the rinsing, but I warned you that it was about 3 or 4 years old. Like I said, I had already rinsed about 10 gallons of saltwater through it before I sold it to you.

HOLY COW!!! Hear that Rock? I almost curled 60lbs!!!!!! Who da man!!?!??

I'm not fretting the rinse D4! I totally expected it... hope you didnt take that as a gripe :). It is excellent sand - and you did warn me about the rinsing. I've rinsed about 15 gallons (did a water-change on my 46 and used the old saltwater). I have the skimmer running too, but I'll need at least another 15 gallons through it I think.

3-4 "years"? I thought you said "days"? :) I think thats a typo. There were worm tracks and a small starfish so I doubt it was 3-4 years :)!

BTW told my wife we're returning the buckets on our way to the beach... Thanks again!

I'm mixing more saltwater for another rinsing. I've had this bag of salt so long that I had to chisel chunks of it off of it to mix with the water. I'm guessing old salt is fine for a rinse though? Worse case is I kill some of the bacteria right?

LOL!

LOL!

Brian,

I meant it used for 3 or 4 years, It was only sitting in my garage for a few days. BTW, I'm no expert, but I think the old salt will be fine...

Thank you for offering to bring my buckets back, most people would have just taken them and ran. You are a credit to reefer addicts everywhere...
