Hello, I am startin up a 3 gallon nano and I am looking at live stock options. I was wondering how a small fish like a neon goby would do in a tank like that?

Current List

1-Neon Goby
3-Sexy Shrimp
Assorted Snails

Would it be better to go with a cleaner shrimp rather than a goby?

I think you'd be alright with the neon goby in a 3 gallon nano. If they're jumpers like other gobies cover the tank.

One thing about small saltwater tanks if finding a inhabitant that can live comfortably in the tank. Neon Gobies reach 2" when full grown and housing one in a 3 gallon tank with limited space just sounds cruel in my opinion. With having a fish you would have a heavy bioload and it could possibly lead to bad water problems. Skunk Cleaner shrimp also get too large for a 3 gallon and although they mainly stay underneith overhangs they do like to roam around the tank especially during feeding time. I would stick with your 3 Sexy shrimp as they stay small and would be great for this size of tank.

As for a cleanup crew you really don't need much in the way of inverts but variety is best. I would personally go with somthing like this:

1 Nassarius snail (smaller species)
1 Cerith
1 Astraea
1 Hermit Crab

I had about the same amount of inverts as my cleanup crew in my 2.5g tank and it worked out great.

Good luck with your tank and if you have any more questions just aks. :)

I have a 2.5 and have my clean up crew in now. I am going to put a goby in as well. Haven't decided which type though. If you do an internet search you will find that there are a few of different types of gobies that grow to be 1-1.5 inches which in my opinon is fine.

thats what I thought, but others have said no. I will check my LFS see what they say, they are very reliable.

You should also check out nano-reef.com. They have a pico forum where you can see what others are stocking in their tanks.
