Livestock question

Well, Everything in my tank seems to be doing fine, all my levels have been zero'ed out for quite awhile now, the corals in there that ive gotten from trades are doing great and i'm going to take the plunge into livestock now.....

My main "livestock" that I wanted to keep was a mated pair of clowns (I really wanted maroons, but I think theyll get to big for my 29 biocube, so Ill most likely be going with some true percs..) and a host anemone.... So my question to everyone is should I buy the anemone first and let that get settled in the tank, then get the fish like a week later, or do you think I should put them all in there at the same time and hope for the best.... Also, what type of anemone should I be looking at getting for the percs to host, is there a certain type that does better than another with certain clowns ??

The only other livestock I wanted to keep in there was possibly a purple firefish, and a clown goby.... Should I be introducing this group of fish in a certain order, or would I be okay starting with the percs....

I would also LOVE to get a spotted mandarin, but was told I should be waiting atleast 6 months before getting one to ensure there are plenty of pods for it to eat so it doesnt starve....

Would all of these fish be okay together, or should I be looking to replace certain species with another type.

Thanks for any help.... :)

First of all, glad to see the corals you got from me are doing good. I jammed all the LR into my 75 gallon reef tank, and just used up the dry rock for my 45 hex that I just started cycling.

What kind of lighting do you have, and how long has the tank been setup?

Adding the clowns first should be no problem all of these fish are pretty peaceful, i'd also reccomend getting a pair of the firefish they seem to do better in pairs, the clown goby will be fine as well.

Regarding the mandarin, there is no way your tank will ever have enough pods to support it.. You need a minimum of 100 lbs of LR, and I've got 135 in my 75 gallon, and I still dont feel like there is enough for a mandarin to survive in it..

I personally would swap out the clown goby for something else, you dont see much of them, they are def not one of my favorites.. I'd go w/ something like a 6 line wrasse instead..

The tanks been running for almost a month now. I have the nanotuners 4.36 mod done to it, which gives me 144w total. I ditched the stock 240 GPH pump for a Rio 6HF which moves 350 GPH, and also ditched all the "plumbing" with all its 90 degree elbows and reducers and ran a piece of Eheim 16/22 tubing straight from the pump to the outlet on the flase wall, so there is a TON of flow in the tank, although I may be putting a Tunze 6025 into it once I can get my grubby paws onto it. I also added a Sapphire skimmer into the second chamber and thats skimming like a champ. :)

I know im limited with my coral selection because of the PC lighting, should I be fine with that much lighting for the fish im looking to keep ??? Theyre eventually going to be coming out with a 2 X 70w HQI MH setup that also holds a 36w actinic for color, so once that comes out I will be buying one.

I would like a six line wrasse, but didnt know if I could keep it with those other fish...

Oh, I also wanted to get a skunk cleaner shrimp... not sure if that makes any difference.

What about a pair of Rod's Onyx and a RBTA? If you get the MH upgrade then you could even do a small H. crispa instead of the BTA.

I always thought the orange/ish clowns & the rose anemone colors clashed. That's why I bought B&W clowns. I have a pair of B&W saddlebacks for sale $30.

I like the onyx clowns, It just says thetre not yet for sale and that theyre only being sold to "select" tanks, I would be guessing this wont be including nanos. :)

Do you have a pic of the saddlebacks puffer ??? I dont remember them when I came by the house that one day...

Thanks...

Ahh, so you haven't been to Rod's yet have ya? Send him an email (email addy is on his website). It's been a while since he has updated his site.

Nope, I have yet to go to rods store..... but from what I hear people talking about on here, I should leave the high limit credit cards at home before going. :)

I PM'ed him about the onyx clowns and am waiting to hear back from him.... It sounds like theyll be perfect for my setup. Do any of you know what anemone I should be looking at for the onyx clowns ???

I was told I should start with the firefish first since it is the most passive and then go from there also, does that sound about right ??

I just heard back from Rod, and will be going with 2 onyx clowns, now that I know that is there any order I should be putting the livestock into the tank in, or am I pretty good on these fish selections....

I believe Rod's Clowns hang out in an H. Crispa (carpet anemone). They may take to a Haddoni, but I'm not sure if the sting would be too potent for them. Unfortunately both of the aforementioned anemones require MH lighting. I have also seen Perc's hosting in BTA's, but from what I understand, they typically don't prefer the BTA's.

As far as the fish go, I would add the clown goby first, then the firefish, and finally the clowns.

Rod recommends BTA's although they are not it's natural host. My onyx seemed to host everything BUT the BTA, but my buddies went straight for his BTA. So I guess it's always hit or miss. I'm glad you chose to go with onyx clowns, you will NOT be dissapointed! and I agree with hansnfrans regarding introduction of the livestock....

My Onyx clowns host in a RBTA went into it the day I put them in. It took my false percs about 2 months to find there RBTA when I got them

So is my best bet to have the BTA in the tank already when they are introduced, or should I wait till theyre acclimated to the tank and then introduce the BTA ??

Thanks again guys....

And FINALLY, nanotuners has just come out with a MH mod for my tank, problem is that right now its only a 1 bulb 70w HQI MH setup.... Would this be better for my tank, or am I better off with the 144w of PC versus 70w of MH ????

I thought they were going to be releasing a 2 70w MH with PC actinic supplementation, but I dont know how far out thats going to be....

I would absolutely, positively not put saddleback clowns in that small of a tank. They are some of the most aggressive clowns on the market. They have always been very aggressive in my 180 tank and I personally would not even think of putting them in less than a 4 foot long tank if you want to be able to put any other fish in there with them.

The guy I bought my 150 from had a carpet and a GBTA under 320 watts of VHO for 2 years. They looked pretty healthy to me and were in my tank for 4 months on the same lighting. The carpet is like 13 inches across. I recently upgraded to halides but the carpet was doing fine under the VHO's. He even had him self settled on the bottom and not closer to the lights.

So I should be okay with a GBTA with the PC lighting I have, or would the 70w MH be better for the tank than the 144w of PC ?? I know that corals respond better to MH lighting, but the 74w difference just seems like a HUGE difference to me.
