Loc-line return question - Noisy

Hi. I just finished setting up my sump and return line for my 75g tank. The return is 3/4 pipe with loc-line at the top. The only problem is that where the loc-line comes out it seems like water (or air) is escaping from the connection and making a horrible hissing and spraying. Is there anyway to fix this, does the loc-line have to be completely submerged?

I'm not sure why it's hissing, but I'm sure that you don't have to submerge the lock-line.

What's your sump pump? and describe your system, please.

Sorry about the delayed response. My tank is a 75g perfecto reef ready with a single corner overflow. The sump is a 20g long AGA. Water drains via a 11/4 inch PVC pipe and is returned via a 3/4 inch pipe powered by a QuietOne 3000 pump. Im dealing with the flushing effect (water rising up and down the overflow and burping with bubbles) also. I think this may be caused because the drainpipe is straight down (rigid PVC), but Im not sure. (just in case you have a suggestion for that too)

No problem about being late. I'm in no hurry. ;)

Flushing: You are correct. The drain pipe being vertical can cause this. Usually flushing occurs by back pressure in the drain line. How far underwater in your sump is the 1-1/4" pvc drainpipe? Try 1-2 inches below the water level or at the water surface. Maybe adding a 45 to get the drainpipe on a slope.

Different question: In your overflow corner box, is it just a hole(bulkhead) for drainage? If so, does that make much splash noise too. Well, it might not make much noise now that it is backing up, but once we fix this flushing problem, the saltwater will drop the whole distance and should make splash noise. I'd recommend a "richard durso" standpipe.

Lock-Line Hissing: It's not causing bubbles to enter your tank or spray saltwater out of the lock-line, is it? Just noise, right?
Oh yeah, when I said that the lock-line didn't have to be submerged... I meant everything but the nozzle tip. =) Which you probably gathered. Also, you shouldn't have the nozzle tip too far below the water surface. In case of power outtage, you will get reverse siphon (you may have a check valve... but, I would not count on that. Best to have the nozzle barely below the water surface).

I fixed the problem with the gurgling ~ it wasn't the straight pipe (which I angled anyway) , it was the size of the hole on the top of the Durso. I made it slightly bigger and it made all the difference. As far as the loc-line is concerned, I think the noise has something to with how the water drains where the return pipe is. It still splashes a little but I learned to live with it. If you dont have any more suggestions, this thread is as good as closed. Thanks for the input.
