Hi Kone, Lighting age can play a large factor in algae growth, that being said age for lighting is better measured in hours used as apposed to years. So if you run them for say 7hrs. a day(7*365=2555), there measured output is in "PAR" there are meters to measure this but they are a little expensive and you need to measure when first installed and as they age, most of us just change on a rough hourly or monthly schedule, depending on use, mine I change about every 1000-1500 hours. Also your phosphate readings I am assuming you are using a standard test kit? They don't read the lower limits so are pretty much a waste of money(sorry). They make testers to read lower limits but here again they arnt cheep, i think there are a few local members that have some(my self not included :-( ) that if some kind of arraignment can be made they might test your water for you.You also might want to test your R/O water with a good TDS meter with all the chemicals in our water the filters don't last very long. Other than that the use of GFO has helped me a lot in my tanks, but I would check some of the things mention as well. Hope this helps and if i can answer anymore questions feel free to ask...Patrick

Also, the reef chemistry form here has loads of good info, just remember as myself included, a lot of this is opinion, and what works for one doesn't work for everybody!

all my test kits are salifert.i do have a tds meter on my ro/di system maybe its my lights im thinking thats causing the algea.now im running 2 250watt hqi metal halides coralife 20,000k and 4 39 watt atintics two are 460 nm and two are 420mn they came with my outer orbits system the only ones i changed were the halides about a year ago .when i buy new lights should i still do 20k or go lower and what about my t5s i was thinking the powerchrome made by geisman what i dont under stand is the 460nm and 420nm when i do buy new lights what does everybody else use????????

Like I mentioned before, all of you lights need to replaced on a regular basis,as far as the light spectrum, thats a decision you need to make,(10000,12000,15000,20000,ect.)on my one personal tank(120g) I run two 15k 250 watt MH's,on a 7 hour schedule then 2,110 watt Actinic's on a 10hr. schedule and a 250mh. (20k)for two 1.5hr regiments throughout the day,but I have a lot of larger corals in my tank. You have an afull lot of light in that tank you might want to try and shorten the time they are on.

ok i run my actinics from 6am to 6pm and my halides come on 8am to 4pm what would you or any body recommend???

I don't get it. Why does everyone get upset about tangs in tanks? Oh, I get it, it's because it is alone in the tank. They are best kept in groups like mine in a 20 gallon high:
