bosborn1,
It can definately get frustrating sometimes to find access to the things I want at a fair price and I do agree that some of our LFS have overpriced dry goods. At this point I only shop either online or at CF. Everyone at CF knows my name as I've been going in there for over 5 years now. Brian and Ryan both are very honest with me on whether a particular coral is something they'd take home or not. They are the two that I've talked to the most there. Millie is also nice to talk to but I save my questions for the guys as she seems to be busy a lot. I attempted to shop at Tom's TRS after he left CF but due to a long story I'll just state I no longer go to TRS. I have been to MO a few times but tend to only get dry goods there as I don't like the fact that the corals and fish are not price marked as it makes me wonder if they would tell me the same price they gave someone else. Plus they are 30 minutes away when CF is only 5 minutes away from me...
As far as the other stores, I will NEVER purchase live saltwater fish/corals from Petco or Petworld as every time I look the tanks are looking pretty dirty and the fish always seem to have ich or bacterial infections. Drygoods, however, I do purchase from them if the price is right. I have also found a new favorite store for FW fish... the Petsmart that just opened up in Webster is 5 minutes away, has very healthy fish and the girl actually asked me questions like how big was my tank and did I know what to feed the particular fish I was buying. On the one hand I felt a bit put off that she would question me but I think it's more important for her to ask as there are many people out there that will sell anything to anyone even if it ends up dying due to improper care.
In the past year all my purchases have been made from drsfostersmith.com, liveaquaria.com, reefermadness.us and CF. Every one of them has provided me with excellent service any time there was a problem.
From what I have seen prices are different in many areas of the country. I visited stores when I lived in New Hampshire, Vermont, Florida and now in NY and each one was a different price range. Stores are in business to make a profit so some markup is expected. If the markup is a bit too high, I just don't buy the marked up items from that particular store. Many one stop stores like Walmart and Target have varying prices. While Walmart is cheaper for one thing, Target is cheaper on another. These stores count on the consumers being willing to buy everything at one place instead of taking time out of our lives to purchase things from many different places. I have seen many people buying dry goods from CF and have wondered why when the same thing online is cheaper. It could be any number of things from them being someone who wants to physically see something before they buy it, wanting to support their LFS, being too lazy to shop around, etc. If no one was buying the dry goods at the higher price then I'm sure that by now either the prices would have come down or the dry goods wouldn't be sold at all.
As far as attitudes in stores around here I would like you to analyze if the differences you experienced were only in the fish stores or if the difference was in the community as a whole. I will say with conviction that our community in the Rochester area is starting to embarass me. Every time I go in public there are nasty, irritable, impatient people and it makes me sick. The communites I lived in in NH, VT and FL were completely different. Everyone was civil, caring and most of the time they would drop everything to help a complete stranger. Not around here... I have been saving my pennies for years now and after a couple more years will be saying good riddance to this area/state. Still trying to decide between Arizona or Texas...
