Hello everyone,
I have been looking around a lot for a new lighting system and i have been told that LEDs are new and upcoming, the tank i would be getting the system for is a 90 gallon 48" tall 24" tall and 18" wide, so i was told get a marineland LED, and i looked online and found a MarineLand Double bright LED system it was 46 white and 8 blue leds, Would i be able to kepp corals under this? i would love to get into corals and i was also wondering if i could keep some anenomes under this

The two LED lighting system would be either called a 36"-48" = that has 36 white and 6 blue bulbs (2610 lumens)
The other would be called a 48"-60" and that has 46 white and 8 blue(3340 lumens)
Which should i choose? sorry for such a long post but i would love some help Thank You All!

Search for led on the search tab. There are a lot of discussions out there. Personally, I like my AI fixtures. Corals pop and grow well also.

I have also been researching LED and I would have to agree with icu2. So far I am really liking the Aqua Illuminations set up. Its modular so you can add more lights in the future, the fixures are upgradable when new LED tech comes out, and its compatible with the APEX controller. I also like the weather effects. The light storm effect is really cool there's a video on youtube. Don't think i would use it on my tank on a regular basis but when guests are over you can give them a nice light show!

AI seems to be the best way to go. I am trying ecoxotic and have not taken PAR readings yet, but already am not sure they are in the same league as AI...

So is there anything wrong with the MarinLand LEDs? I have found them online priced around 350 for the ones with 46 white,8blue and 260ish for 36white and 6blue…. they seem to be reasonably priced and i have heard that they last like 10 years! comparing and contrasting to the AIs are they not as bright or what?
Thank you guys for the responds!

Quite a bit less efficient vs Crees which means more operating costs of the life of the fixture. Probably way too few blues (if you were DIYing 1:1 white to blue would be common), and probably not much PAR overall. They look decent, but I doubt full reef capable. I've seen them but not heard any practical reviews. Tim

Alright thanks Tim, i have been looking around and we went to RMS west aquatics and one of the workers there and he was telling me to look into those, at the time i was looking at the 608W odyssea light that supports 2x250W HQI, 2x54W T5,4xLEDs and that costs 239.90
i was told its made in japan and not too well? is this so? and if not would this one be a good one to buy over the MarineLand LED system? Im open to sugestions on system too!
Thank you guys, Tyler

Remember, sometimes you get what you pay for. In this hobby most equipment is priced high or low for a reason.

The Odysseas used to be known to catch fire, not sure where they are made. Like icu2 stated, I think this is a case of getting what you pay for. However, if those are the only two choices, I think I'd go with the LEDs. I would recommend you thoroughly educate yourself on LEDs before buying anything so you can make an informed decision. The trip to the CORA meeting in June should be a trip well spent.

Those are not the only choices i have just a few i came up with... they were within a good budget due to the fact im only in high school and dont have a good job so not a lot of money, i am selling one of my tanks so i will have a extra 250 and i was looking around for a good price... could anyone give me some links to a all around good system please and as always thank you

Lots of times people have great used equipment on here that may be more in that price range. I've seen some decent 48" T5 units fairly reasonable. Maybe the Marineland 4x 48" T5 light is an option... I don't mean to discourage you, but Marineland uses 1W LEDs. It may be perfectly good for a FO setup. I just don't think it will fly with corals, and anemones. Maybe you could Google some reviews? Good Luck!
Tim

I agree. If you're in a limited budget, I'd stick with a less expensive T5 setup. LED's are the exact opposite of what you're trying to do right now. A decent LED setup is based on the LONG TERM cost and electricity savings with the downside of a much higher up front cost. If you don't have the up front money, that pretty much squashes that idea.

Don't buy cheap, or else you'll end up with a bad investment and money thrown down the drain. Lighting is crucial to our tanks, and honestly it's the last place to try to save a buck or two in my opinion.

You might look at this in Matis' thread: A $200 48" Aquatic Life 4 Bulb t5 Light fixture with Cable suspension system and 3 channel digital light timer/controller (retail $369)
