Looking at setting up a SPS Nano (advice)

So I've never really done a nano and I'm trying to think of what the ideal size and setup would be for a nano SPS tank. I want all the equipment to be hidden in an intank sump or normal sump below. I'm wondering if return pumps would add enough flow for the SPS. I'm wanting to go for a clean simple look. I've had a 100g SPS dominated tank 2 years ago but now I have a condo so it's going to have to be a nano. Any Advice or suggestions would be awesome very open to ideas.

Something like the red Sea 170 or nano or the newer versions. They have a couple smaller sizes now, complete plug and plug ( one version at least)

Are you downsizing your 100g tank, or setting up a second tank? What sizes are you considering? If you just want a swanky-looking non-standard dimension/size tank, maybe look into the Innovative Marine Lagoon 50. That's what I would do if I was going to do something between my current 29g and a big tank.

My vote is to always go with the largest tank you can, particularly with SPS. Parameter swings come pretty quick in nanos, and SPS don't like that.

Return pumps don't add enough flow for acropora. You'll want/need additional pumps.
For reference, this is my experience in nano-reefing with SPS:
29g Biocube with modified lighting, giant skimmer, and 2 MP10 powerheads, 2 part dosing, and more.

Unfortunately I'm starting back up from nothing:/ I had to sell the 100g tank due to moving and didn't have space for it. My only issue is I don't have a large footprint for this tank. Has anyone done SPS in A 45 tall? I know it's going to be hard to get the correct par to the bottom?

I think you will need a power head for various flow patterns the return pumps​ probably won't have enough flow for an sps dominant tank anyway especially if there the stock pumps.

There nano one isn't too big. A little bigger than the vortech. About the same size as one of the koralia nano pumps. I have one in my 34g

It pulses to create waves which is more spread out but also is stronger because it is moving more water back and forth.

I started a nano tank about 3 months ago more as a holding tank for my big build coming up and something to play with. Mine is a 15g cube. I've quiet enjoyed having a nano, and I would do another one. Things I would do now I've had one. long nano tank like 24x18x18 would be my preference next time and I have an aio, would definitely do sump.

The vortech pumps have a specific setting for "pulse" mode. Hard to believe the jebao would outdo the vortech, but to each their own. .

My vote is for an mp10 in a nano. The various modes, slim design and lack of heat warming the water are the biggest selling points for me.

Not trying to get into a fanboy discussion. I read reviews that say the vortech is a better pump as well, just not $200 better. If I had money to spend, maybe I go that route. But for $30 I love my jebao.

I feel like the jebao is small enough and moves water almost as well as the vortech. So between the two, if money is any concern, I recommend the jebao.

From personal experience as far as reliability, I had a jebao pump go out on me after 2.5 years. The impeller was getting stuck and wasnt spinning reliably. I probably could have fiddled with it to keep it working a while longer, but for the price, I just bought a replacement.

If I assume that I have to buy a replacement pump every 2.5 years it would still be between 16-20 years before it added up to the cost of a vortech. Maybe in 10 years if vortech is cheaper I would get one, but for now I'm sticking with my jebao.

You're the exception though. For every person who claims they get years from a Jebao pump, there are 50 that don't get more than a couple months.

I understand budget coming into play, I really do. I started my current tank with 2 used Tunze pumps and saved for months to get Vortech pumps again.

On a nano, they are the best pump available IMO. I think you would sing a different tune if you got less than 6 months of use out of the Jebao stuff.
