check out ebay, several locals have had good success with this vendor. their systems have make alot of bang for your buck, so to speak.
only real drawback on their system is the horizontal DI, but its not that big of a deal if you keep the beeds mixed up and the TDS still reads 0 or 1. not really sure what the point is in buying a $200+ system to get a 0 TDS reading when you can buy a cheaper one and also get a 0 TDS reading.

probably not worth it to build a from-scratch unit around (unless you happened to have a few 10" housings laying around for the carbon/sediment), but for anyone who needs a new membrane spectrapure has a sweet deal going on. http://www.spectrapure.com/St_MEM-ENC-75.htm
could also use it to run parallel with the membrane you already have to ~double production. and there is some talk (didn't follow it long enough to see if there was resolution) but you might be able to run 2-3 in series (to reprocess each's waste water) along with a booster pump to reduce wasted water down the drain.
