Looking for Chaeto?

Hello everyone,

Im looking for an alternative to a protein skimmer, I currently have a Aquatic Life Systems Aggressor AIS-90 that came with my tank but I rather not use it nor am I sure how to hook it up. Ive read that Mangroves or Chaeto work just as well. I dont have much room in my sump for mangroves so I wanted to try chaeto but Im having trouble finding it locally. Would anyone know where I could buy it or have extra they could sell me?

I am sure someone in our club in the area would be glad to help you get the skimmer you have set up. You are really going to need one, IMO, on a 90 gal. tank, especially if you have fish. I do have chaeto, but do not live in Memphis and will not be there until our meeting on the 21st. Why not come and join us?? We have lots of IT Guys in the club.

You can get it at the LFS , just ask , they usually have some.

chaeto will help remove nitrates and add oxygen to the water but it will not airate the water or remove excess protein from the water, a good skimmer is a major key in keeping a healthy sucessful tank, unless you plan on more waterchanges more frequently

Both th LFS have chaeto, I usually have some that I give out at the meetings when I cut mine once a month.

BUT< that being said in a tank the size you are wanting to run I would Not at all think that it will substitue for a protein skimmer.

I have my skimmer on my 55 and dump the "crap" out of it every other day. I also do weeklu (usually) water changes of approx. 10%, Plus a sump and refugium where I grow mangroves and Chaeto.

If I was going to do without any of it it would be all BUT the skimmer.
