Looking for DOW FLAKE

I think I might be too late to find any but if you have seen some very recently please let me know where...

Thank you,

BK

Why just dow flake? Prestone Driveway heat always seems to be around.

Home Depot will have some around somewhere. Just look up on top of the shelves in the garden area. For that matter I have seen it in the jugs at walgreens really discounted this time of year.

I have some Driveway heat you can have as well, enough to get you by for awhile anyhow.

ditto on the prestone. If you are using this for a regular 2 part you need to get an older batch than is sold in the stores now due to increased bromide. If it's just to bump the numbers on IO for water changes it's fine to use the new stuff. You can get some of the older product from bulkreefsupply.com

Hey Roy... how can you tell if the product is the older stuff or newer? Some of the bags they sell at the stores look to have been around for awhile.

BK, I do have an older bag in the garage that you can have some of.... Had it at least a year....

Howard: Thank you for the offer I will let you know if I decide to use it...

DOC: as always you know where to look...

I have been using TurboCalcium to boost and maintain my Ca levels. The stuff is very expensive to be used on a day to day basis. 13 bucks for a cup of it.

Since adding all the sps to my tank I have been throwing about one tablespoon of the stuff into my tank to kee the levels just above 400 ppm. I can't seem to get the Ca levels any higher.

If Dow Flake is not safe or we don't know if it is safe as of now, is there something else I should use until I can afford to throw another 400 to 600 bucks into this tank for a Ca reactor?

Thanks,

BK

Froom looking at the thread that Roy gave the link to, I would get thee to Home Depot or Lowes and check the batch numbers. Mine in the garage is good, and from what I read in the thread link, even the new stuff would work to maintain levels.

It appears it would also work to raise levels if you do large enough water changes, at least I think I read that.

I need to raise mine and keep them up there so I will need to use a lot of the stuff. Randy does not know what bromide might or might not do to a reef in the long run. Maybe it's safe for a little while until I can get the money for a Ca reactor or until I build one...

I think that if I boost the levels now and keep them up with 10% water changes every week I should be fine but the risk is still there...

The risk is in too much Bromide, but there is some level of Bromide in seawater naturally, so raising the levels a bit at least in the short term should be ok with water changes.

There should be no worry at all if you find or order some of the older stuff from Bulk reef or some such. Randy's 2-part is easy to make and use.

The production date of December 2006 is supposedly the cutoff for the low bromide stuff. I saw Driveway Heat at the Lowes in Fairview Heights the other day that was packaged Dec 06. I almost bought a bunch, assuming that since is was packaged 12/06 it must have be produced earlier. I still have about 30 lbs worth from 2004, however it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stock up now.

I would use the later manufactured cacl to correct an imbalance and look for some different for regular use. If you can incorporate kalk for daily demand it eliminates this problem. Don't think for a minute that other 2 part makers and even salt manufacturers stopped using the dow CaCl anyway.
