looking for LFS's

I'm new and was wondering if I could get a good list of LFS's on Long Island that carry salt water. I've been to Magic Isle in Centereach and Aquarium Adventure in Carle Place, and was looking for others and their locations. Here is my experience with them so others can see:

Aquarium Adventure in Carle Place is tremendous, it is more like an aquarium than an LFS. They have hundreds of tanks, both fresh and salt, many of which are over 100 gallons, and they even have a shark tank. All of the fish look extremely healthy as well. Prices are somewhat inflated, but it may be worth the extra dough for a fish you know is healthy. Huge selection of inverts as well, as the staff is very knowledgable.

Magic Isle in Centereach seemed pretty good. They have about 20? marine tanks, and the fish seem pretty healthy, way better than a Petco or Petland anways. Prices are pretty good on livestock. Staff expertise seemed okay. As long as you do your own research this seems like a good place to buy.

What else is in there?

PETS in New Hyde Park, Reefs and Rivers in Mineola, and Fish Town USA in Flushing are my favs. I've heard that the Pet Barn in Franklin Sq. is decent too, never been though.

country crittersin patchogue, petswarehouse in Copiague, a lot of fish in babylon, pet stop in huntington are all pretty good stores,

right now pet stop is rebuilding there reef system though

xhaust50- I live in Smithtown as well, I really like Suffolk County Fish and Reef in Ronknokoma.

Thanks for the responses. I went to Suffolk County Fish and Reef today (saturday) but they were closed, they close at 7pm. Tomorrow I am going back, and I am also going to check out Aqua Hut and Country Critters. Then another day I will check out Fishy Inc in Bayshore and Pets Warehouse.

i am also in smithtown as well as terranova. if you need any help with ideas i am more then happy to help.

i like aquahut. either look for the owner don or the long haired guy. they know the salt water the best.

I went to Fishy Inc last week. Not to much to see IMO.
Yesterday I went to Mineola... same thing but I have to say the stock seems to be healthy, and they close 6 PM on Sat.
I like more Aquarium Adventure but the prices  ...
Next week I'll go to suffolk.... maybe...
Fishtown is about 10-15 blocks from home. I have seen every fish they have.
If someone looks for something specific, I can go and take a look for you before you start up the car

While you're there, keep an eye out for anyone with money for me please ;)

Update:

I went to

Fishy Inc (Bayshore)
A Lot of Fish (West Islip/Babylon)
Pets Warehouse (Copiague)

Fishy Inc and A Lot of Fish were pretty small. Not a great fish selection, and the fish were pretty high prices ($50 for a firefish). However, both had a pretty decent coral selection compared to Magic Isle of Centereach.

I went to Pets Warehouse looking to see some of the rarer fish that they claim "in stock" on their website, but when I got there I learned that the internet company is a completely different company than the actual store. Bummer. However, they did have a pretty good selection of fish and corals and prices were average. I would still lean towards Magic Isle as my go to store as I hear they can order fish for you.

I will check out Aqua Hut and Long Island Reef next weekend.

So long as you're touring, do check out Country Critters in Patchogue... Lots to look at with lots of dollar signs on the glass.

hey...as Ray said I live in Smithtown tooo :)

dont know why I didn't open up this thread earlier but here is what I have to say...

I used to work at Magic Isle. For over a year actually. I rarely bought things from there. The only thing I can REALLY praise them for is they get a really good selection of ORA fish, and they will order anything you want, including things like moorish idols. They get their fish in on Monday nights, best to pick them up before they're put into the system, they dont acclimate well. And for reef, dont bother. Overpriced and poor selection. But they do get lots of anenomes which is a plus. When you're there, ask for either Ryan, Bob, or Alex. :) Oh, and tell them Liana sent you.

Personally my favorite store is Pets Warehouse in Copiague. I think they have some of the best prices and the best selection. They also offer a discount to LIRA members I think. :) I've had really good luck with their stuff. I wish it wasn't such a hike.

Country Critters is okay. Their prices are kinda high, and personally I dont think their selection is all that impressive, though it is a fun place to visit. Just like Aquarium Adventure. I dont think I've bought livestock from either. Maybe inverts.

Suffolk Fish & Reef I haven't been to in awhile, but they sometimes get some oddball things in like sharks and rays and it's quite possible they have developed a bit since I was there. They have a pretty cool set up and if you come in RIGHT after a shipment, you might find some things you like. The owner Joe is intimidating but friendly IME.

Aqua Hut has fair prices and a good selection, just dont mind the walls of the store or the fact that they dont answer their phones, ever. :)

And I guess that's basically the LI stores in a nutshell, the only other one I can think of is Creature Comforts in Farmingville, which has only saltwater fish, and nothing special. Good prices on dry goods though. And of course, Les at Fishy Inc. is always willing to help us out. So are people like Cindy/Joe and Tony who have online stores.

Suffolk County Fish and Reef in Ronknokoma is a great place. Joe and Corey are both great guys, and will take time to answer questions and make recommendations. I have always been weel taken care of there.

Another Smithtown resident here :)
Right now my favorites are Aqua Hut and Pets Warehouse, great prices and selection IMO. The one item with Pets is they do keep the salinity very low, around 1.019 last time, so make sure to acclimate slowly. The one place I haven't seen listed yet is Selmars in Huntington, about average.
