I'm in the market for Clownfish. I have a 75 gallon tank currently and would like to add a pair of clownfish to it in the near future. Currently I have a Yellow Tang, a Yellow Tail Damsel and a purple stripe yellow pseudochromis and a brittle starfish.

Eventually, my plan is to get another smaller "corner" type set up and try to breed them.

I'm just starting my research, so please forgive my ignorance on the subject.

I have some ?'s

What type of clown fish are easier? hardier?
What is an ideal size tank for breeding?
Is it ok to start them out in my 75 gallon and then move them?
What kind of enviroment is ideal?
Where is a good place to get the fish?
Is there any tips any of you can offer a newbie?

I'm sure that I'm missing a lot that I need to know, so please feel free to answer any "unasked" questions too - things I didn't know to ask lol

once you acquire a pair, QT them so your heart isn't broken later down the line. Clownfish disease is very common amongst most LFS bought clowns.

Damsels and Chromis' do not get along with clownfish. I am not sure about the yellow Tang, but I have heard of clownfish attacking them.

Hi! Saw your post thought I would throw in my two cents worth..lol:lol2:

I currently have 8 saltwater tanks up and running and a reef in the making...Lets see i started my very first tank with A. Occelaris pair and they were a bonded pair when I purchased them. They were just in the early stages of preparing to breed/spawn when dodo me I just had to have a trigger fish..oh yes a Huma huma or Picasso triggerifsh and he went rogue and took a big bite out of my female so...no triggerfish except for the blue throat trigger I have a nice sumatran marroon clown in with a Harlequin Tuskfish, blue throat trigger fish, blonde nazo tang, purple tang, kole eye tang and no worries there. I also have two new Occelaris in with a yellow tang, and a nazo tang and a brackish green puffer and no problems there. So Clowns are pretty safe with most fish. I currently have 4 pairs of clowns and some babies still growing up and a nasty Clarkii (not all are just mine) and a orange skunk clown and the marroon clown..they are all singles in different tanks....I love clowns as you can see..and yes Joyce Wilkersons book is a must have! I reccomend reading as much as you can find and there are books like "What Fish" that give you general discriptions of the different kinds of fish and their tempermants and the kind of tankmates you can put with them.

Good luck with your decision making I love rare fish and hybrids so I have some Platinum Perculas and some S'mores (black Ice) clowns and Black and white Occ. and regular Occ. and Onyx perculas...I think it really just depends on you and what you like.
