Hi,

My tank is 3+ y o and completly full of corals.

I lost ALL my fish recently after a major power outage.

My tank is back from the disater...All the corals are healthy now.

I do not have any crabs, shrimps...nothing but few tiny hermits and 8 snails(babylons and turbo).

I am looking for a pair of clowns. I am aiming for Yellowstripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus). They have bad reputation...What is your opinion about this clown ?

Thank

TL : DR

I do not have fish right now.

I have a crush for Yellowstripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus).

What is your opinion and experience with this clown.

Thank

I've got five clowns in my 60g cube including one maroon. My experience has taught me that when adding a new clown they MUST, without exception, be much larger than existing clowns. They will fight and a larger clown will be able to defend. If adding two large maroons by aware you most likely wont be adding anymore clowns. That being said, go for it!! The are wicked fun/beautiful fish!!!

I have a pair of gold stripe maroons and I think they are gorgeous!

I think they only have a bad reputation as compared to other clowns... Yes, they are more aggressive than percula or ocellaris clowns. However, as far as marine fish in general they really aren't that bad at all! This can have certain benefits though, as it gives you the option of having clowns in a tank with other larger and more aggressive fish that your normal "nemo" may not be able to cope with. Plus, I like them for not being the "typical" clowns that are so commonplace.

That being said, there are certain considerations to be had just as with any other dominant fish. Pairing maroons will take more time and effort (I succeeded my first time after a month). Also, once established in the tank they will claim a territory and protect it as with any clowns. Once they find a host they will settle to keeping to that area mostly, reducing their area of influence in the tank.

My pair live in a 40 gallon along with a twin spot goby, a royal gramma and a pair of Banggais. They will shoo others away from the 3-6inches around their anemone, but otherwise they cause no problems.

I think their bad rep is mostly overblown and is only based on a comparison to the tamer clowns. I highly recommend them as a nice addition to a tank!

Here's my pair (not the best color rendition from my phone)

IMO Gold Stripe Maroon Clowns are beautiful! They only have a bad reputation of being more aggressive just like BengalReefer said.

I just got rid of all my fish. On Friday I'm gonna be picking up a blizzard, Picasso, black ice and phantom clownfish.
