Hello all, new to this site. Was referred here by a rep from LiveAquaria.com. She was amazing with info and showed me this site which seems to be amazing in itself. My son has been into Octopus for a couple years now, and has been writing college essay papers on them to the point his english prof is looking for new topics.

I started further research in hopes to gift him his own octopus this xmas (he's been asking forever). After much research I feel due to the expense and wanting to do it right, next summer would be a better time frame. I would like to hook him up with people in our area that he can connect with, ask questions, and maybe participate with other enthusiasts.

Also, if anyone has any contacts with anyone at the Boston Aquarium that he might be able to intern, work, or at minimum talk with, please contact me.

PS - I am new to this, and if Im in the wrong area to post this please send me to the right location.
Thank you in advance,
Candace

i live in spencer mass and i recently bought 2 octos from ny aquitcs wich i belive to be a. aculeatus, these species are well suited to living in a 65 or larger tank and are not nocturnal so they are an excelent option for an aqurium pet for someone with reef keeping experience. does he have a tank set up allready? a suitable tank for an octopus should be up and runing for at least 6 mo or better and have a protien skimmer rated for 2 times the tank capasity and a sealed top with no openings for the octo to squeeze out of, an octo creates alot of bioload on a tank and produces alot of waste that standard filtration won't handle well enuf to keep the octo healthy. i'd be happy to help with the details of tank setup but if you don't have a tank set up yet that is the first step mabie get the tank for christmass and the octo in the summer after the tank has cycled
i am also hoping to start raising cuttlefish very soon and hope to have tank bred young for sale by late next summer
you can e-mail or pm me if you'd like my asistance
good luck

Wow GPX1200, he is cool! No we havent started anything yet, like I said I just am finally agreeing to the idea, and after looking into this deeper I realized that its so important to do it right, and it takes time to do so. We are in Littleton MA, he's in college in Fitchburg, Spencer isnt far. Would you be willing to show off your tank? I'd like him to get to see what it looks like, talk to someone face to face, and see what it will require for upkeep. His birthday is August which is why I think its a good time to start the process for a next summer final. - I posted my email above, if you would be willing, please contact.

shure i love to show of my tanks(their are 4 of them right now 6 if you count a sump with a mantis shrimp living in it and a feeder tank and 7 if you count the big bucket i keep crabs in for the octos). looking at a runing setup is the best way to get an idea of what you need and if you realy want this going on in your house(my bedroom looks like the fish room at a messy pet store). i build alot of my own equipment like sumps, hoods and led lighting so i can help with those as well if you like. if you want to get an octo in august i would definetly get the tank for christmass so it can be up and cycling with some sand and liverock and a few small fish that can be eaten or traded later , this will also give him a chance to get a feel for achualy keeping a tank, reasearch is good but nothing beats experience and an octo is realy not a good beginer pet i have kept aquriums for 30+yrs and reefs for 15yr before i got my first octo and i'm still learning.
i will email you with my phone # and we can talk about it more over the phone .
