Looking for some feedback..

I am in the process of stockpiling for my seahorse tank build.

Brief background:
10+ yrs in the hobby, ran a LFS in Upstate NY for 5 yrs, kept a 120 gal reef with 3 haddoni's SPS, LPS, etc for 8 years until I moved from NY to FL and I sold it all off. Experienced but still a novice with horses, although the store I managed had a display w/ponies I admit I was not its keeper and wish I had paid much more attention to it!

The Plan:
35 Hex - yes I know not the best tank however I love the style and the views, and it provides height which is important for horses right?
Custom stand so I can put in a 30+ gal sump/fuge to help w/gas exchange and more water volume is always better for parameters I do plan to drill the 35 (sticker on the bottom says bottom tempered, but I am going to test the sides with the sunglasses/lcd test

Light - Kessil A150W LED Light 15K Ocean Blue

Structure - Tonga Branch with some Figi if I have to, but I love Tonga branch and I am going back up north for a week and back to my old store where the old boss is cherry picking her best stuff for me! This rock should offer plenty of hitches for the ponies with its natural branching

Flow - Strong return pump (thinking mag 9.5) that will split off, one high one low and then a power head based on what I have going, kind of hard to plan until your actually doing it and can see how the currents develop. I know what I need to achieve and if I can do it without power heads Id like to try

Livestock - Here is where I am stuck! I love the Kuda's and the Erectus'
I will start with a pair but am torn as to which species I would want, I am fascinated by both and it may come down to what I can find when its time.

I plan to have a yellow watchman/pistol shrimp pair - yes I have done plenty of reading on this and I know it is a small risk but given the proper room/food/and habitat I believe it will be fine.

I also plan to have maybe some neon gobies or clown gobies or a trio of blue green chromis (which I know is the riskiest of the three)

I plan to use gorgs and maybe a sponge or two, some ric's, maybe a candy coral, and I was thinking maybe an acro or two at the top

Now my time line is to be up and running in July as I am on vacation for 10 days the end of june and I would not add ponies and then leave for that amount of time.

So please pick my plan apart! The more advice the better as I have been out of the hobby for a year or so and want to be absolutely sure I think of everything!

Everything looks alright for 2 ponies except I would not be comfortable with your tank mate choices. H erectus are a good starter seahorse as they are the hardiest. I would also purchase seahorses that are captive bred. Dan from Seahorse source is excellant and he's in FL.

I will most definitely purchase from Dan, I've heard nothing but great reviews about his horses!:lol2:

I don't see a protein skimmer in your plans, and maybe you plan on one but didn't write it down. I would definitely get one. When I added seahorses to my system I thought my current protein skimmer would be fine but I underestimated. 6 months later I upgraded to a much bigger skimmer, rated 180 gallons for my 70 gallon system. It pulls out very dark skimmate every 2 days because the seahorses are so dirty. And that is with me doing pretty big water changes too, 20 -25 gallons a week. I figure an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and excess dissolved organics is believed to be the root of some seahorse maladies.

Oh yes most definitely a skimmer! I wouldn't even consider not using one, well worth their weight in gold IMO! IM estimating 76-80 gallons total volume and will go with a skimmer rated for at least 150-200 gal. I used to run an ASM G4 on my 120 reef (95 gallon sump) ...kinda wish I hadn'd sold it all off....:headwally: I've been wading through the selling forum and craigslist waiting for the right buy.

Ha ha, hindsight is always 20/20, isn't it? I had to chuckle when I realized your little icon was banging it's head against the wall! My skimmer is a SCA 302 and I am very pleased with its performance. If you see one of those I would highly recommend it. Even new on amazon it is very reasonable for the size which is why I chose it. It got good reviews and it is absolutely silent too as a bonus.
