Looking for tips on how to make this image better

Thanks! Some issues I need to resolve. First would be getting a softer light so I can get better detail. I really think this is what is holding this photograph back. Then if I could only learn photoshop....

Last edit for the night.

Well I took what I've learned playing around with this guy and comparing some other ppls photos. I also learned a few things about photoshop. Pretty cool program.

I've looked at a few. I just won't know which things I need until I do a bit more trial and error I guess.

Are you using the timer function or a shutter release? Only reason I ask is I think the problems you are having are caused by camera body movement from pressing the shutter button.

No, I'm not using a timer.... I would like to try that but the goby doesn't like to stay still. Would a remote be just as good?

Yes I do use the remote to photograph. My pumps are off during photography except for the return. I'm using a Nikon D70 with Photoshop CS.

No wonder they aren't "perfect". Nikonians...pfffttt ;) (I'm totally joking)

Some days I wish I would've gone with the cannon....;)

Would it be better instead of widening the depth of field to take three different focal points and merge them all in photoshop? That way everything is in focus.

So I switched the camera to RAW image format and took a few. The difference is amazing.

Amazing how much the image has improved with all your hard work. That last one looks really nice! And the fish is still in the same place - amazing :)

What processing did you do with the RAW version of the photo?

Oh yeah you gotta shoot any fish tank with RAW. The people who say "I don' see the point" totally do not understand what they are doing IMO.

Blew me away after looking at it in RAW format. Instead of trying to white balance every level of the tank RAW lets me point shoot and then adjust color afterwards.

Now the new question is what should I do to better this image?

I don't think I would want to do anything to it.
The fish is sharp, interesting lighting, good composition, great subject, the border matches the color of the coral and isn't distracting, cool sig.

You *could* try to bring out the blues a little more or the yellow in the fish but I personally would not want to. :: hands over diploma :: You are one of us now. Go help some poor sap who can't get it right! :)
