Looking to get back into the hobby....cautiously

I am looking to purchase the JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Cube Aquarium QUAD CF 105 watts..... Looking to mainly go with Softies and some LPS and what my concerns are is the lighting and filtration adequate enough for these corals or will it be full of uprgrades right out of the box? Any Pointers and Criticism would be greatly appreciated.

The stock light is enough to grow what you are looking at. I grew SPS and a clam under the stock 105w PC for months with pretty good success. Not the best way to do it (more power = better for SPS/clam), but it's manageable with the right placement. Softies and LPS should be no problem.

How was filtration and how are dead zones......when i had my previous larger tanks i also had a 12gal deluxe jbj nano that i kept a pair of Black Ocellaris clown in and it seemed to relatively well once i added a larger return pump.....

Adding a larger return is a good thing IMO. Let me ask you this what lighting set up are you going with? I think there are 4 to pick from PC, 150 HQI, LED intermediate, and LED advanced. All of these should be strong enough for what you’re aiming to grow. Just a heads up everyone on this forum complains about the heat in the first two options. If I can sway you to get the led versions I think you’ll be better off. Just think power savings on the lights replacement, keeping the AC on to cool the tank, and light replacement on the leds on the extreme is as short as 5 years longer if you’re using them correctly.

But whatever light you went with is going to be fine for softies and LPS.

I had the JBJ Nano as my first tank. My only issue was the temperature in the summer. I had to leave the top slightly lifted and run my air constantly to keep the temperature below 80. Running a similar setup now (not a JBJ though, open top and LED lighting) and it's much easier to maintain temperature wise. Other than the temperature issue, I upgraded to a stronger pump and never had an issue with my corals (though I only softies, leather and SPS - never a clam) and kept my corals, 1 clown and 1 mandarin (I have to be one of the only ignorant newbies that buys a mandarin not knowing they shouldn't, and gets lucky enough to have him devour cyclopeeze and eventually mysis shrimp) for several years without a problem.

Fewer watts equal lower pars. Still good Par values just a lot lower so limited on coral types I would stay away from anything that is a “high” light animals. Try to stay in the moderate to low light corals.

So as far as Mushrooms would i be able to Ricordias, ect and leathers and some Lps?

I started my jbj intermediate nanocube about 4 weeks ago and all my corals are doing great so far. I have zoa's, gsp, kenyi tree, mushrooms, red cap monti, pocillopora, frogspawn and a hammer coral I am trying to nurse back to health. If you stick with softies and Lps, you shouldn't have any problems at all.
