Looking to get into the hobby

Hello!

I've been doing allot of reading and research on the various sw forums, and would like to get into the saltwater hobby. I would rather buy what I want/need up front.

I was looking for something around 100g, preferably long, T5 lighting, a nice sump/refugium, live rock, etc. I'm interested in fish, some corals, anenimes, basicly whatever else my budget will allow. I realize i'm looking at about $1200 or so for a new low to midrange setup.

Anyone out there getting out of the hobby, or know someone who is, etc.?

I'm talking with a fellow in east tennessee who is willing to sell his 120g RR, 150 pound live rock, 40g sump, Nova Extreme 48" 4x54, Bak Pak skimmer (which is on the low end side) 2x #2 Korlias powerheads, and custom stand for $750. Is that a good price? I'd have to build a new sump, as the one he has isn't going to fit under the stand. Whats you opinion of the rock in the pictures? Decent quality, or too dense? I'm looking at about a 6 hour round trip to pick up his tank.

I'm about 30 miles south-west of Columbia, TN.
Hope you can assist!

the other thing is watch reefcentral people are always looking to up grade or downsize . sorry just thought about that lol

I think the rock is fine. It might be possible to remove one of the end panels on the stand, slide the sump under and then replace the end panel. We'd love for you to join us at our club meeting Saturday. You could meet some good people with a lot of knowledge about the hobby. You might be interested in joining our club also. Here's is info about the meeting: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1533851
Don't be shy, we'd really love to have you there.

That's not bad. Dual overflows. Whose is that? AGA? That rock looks relatively new. Do you know how established the tank is? Hold Old?

Is there a piece of nosing (trim) missing off the very top of the cabinet?

I had a Bak-Pak on my 20-nano, so you'll neeed a real Skimmer ($150-$200) for a 120, depending upon what you're looking to support.

Hi. He mentioned he obtained the setup from a friend. After that, he added the live rocks, and its been going for about 6 months.

It has crushed coral for a substrate, which i understand is not a great idea. If I end up with this, should I change it out for sand before I set it back up?

The world is your oyster. You can change anything you want. And probably should to make it your own. Live Sand. Skimmer. Lights, depending upon what you want to support. SPS, softies or FOWLR.

There's nothign wrong with crushed coral. (if it's "Live".) One of our guys has an all Rubble rock tank that's gorgeous.

You're doing the right thing: Talking to folks, but go talk to the experts at your LFS. They'll tell you straight.

Why is he selling it?? Also, plan on replacing those Bulbs. They're likely old.

I've been running 2 of the Nova Extreme Pro fixtures for over 6 months now - I'm pleased with them.
