i'm looking to start a reef tank i currently have a 125 but it's an agressive tank but i am looking to purchase a new reef tank i had a 40 but it did really bad so i closed it down and gave the corals to a friend he's got a very well established reef tank now there doing great what would be a good size tank and what would be some great starters thnx in advance for the help

If you have the space, I'd suggest getting another 125. They offer a lot of flexibility.

If not, then maybe a 92G corner tank like mine. They may not be selling them any longer, though. I've not seen them in any of the LFS's in a while.

yeah i thought about the 92 corner but whats the dimensions on that also if i took down my aggresive and did corals in there what would i have to change
ryan

a 125 is a great beginer tank its not to big and not to small. i wish i would of started of with that but i started with a 20g then a 24g then a 60g now a 100g and soon upgrading to a 180g. I say go as big as you can now because you will want to go bigger latter.

The dimensions are 34.5 x 34.5 inches (the 2 sides facing the corner) and the curved front is 54 inches. The depth (top to bottom) is about 2 feet.

Oceanic still lists this tank on their website for what that's worth.

As for what you'd have to change in your 125G, you may not not need to change much. It would really depend on the type of corals you want to keep in there. Can you tell us more about your setup (pump types, any closed loops, lighting, sump size, if you have a fuge, etc.)?

im not going to probably get that advanced in the corals for now in the future i might but for now nothin fancy. so i have a rena filstar xp3 filter and a few powerheads for circulation but i need to get rid of my eel before i can go to the corals any suggestions or would you be able to post it for me cause im a new member and i cant he is 4 feet or so and a real showman he almost never hides he was in a display tank at the lfs i worked at and when it went under i grabbed all i could i have 250+ lbs of lr and a crushed coral base should i get sand oh and i have a 10000k lightbulb and an actinic reef growth lighht on both sides

gsm no ive never done a copper dose i just let the tank kinda do it's own with some occasional kick ich to get rid of any ich that could hitch a ride with the gold fish i feed the eel

What do you mean by agressive? I ask because my wife has a
40g with 2 lion fish, a panther grouper, a decorator crab, some
turbos and 2 brains, a nice rock of trumpet corals, 3 or 4 rocks
covered in mushrooms and we just picked up a marine betta
( which will be in the quarintine take for some time yet ). all are
doing GREAT! and she only has a 96w T5 light over it.. it's been
doing great for almost 1 year now.

i have a foor foot moray eel and well he is an eel also that grouper out grow your tank in no time mine is 16 inches and he started at three 10 months ago so she hasn't had it for long that is going to be a way overcrowded tank in a hurry and yes your wife has an aggressive tnk which means most of the fish in your tank will eat and or kill other fish comprende

can i get some feedback on what i need to change in my 125

You good probably get away with adding a protien skimmer and maby adding a little more light.the 10k u talked about,is it a MH?
I have a 90gallon reef ready on low budget.the skimmer is a coral life super skimmer 125.It was only like $125.I keep hearing they are junk but it has worked great for me.

You should go with a tank size you're comfortable with. You alone have to make that decision. You know how much space you have, what your financial situation is, how much effort you want to put into it. I don't think strangers can rightfully make the decision for you.

I've had a 38 gallon for years that I've been happy fooling with. It isn't hard to maintain and I don't go through nearly as much salt and other media as I would for a 125. To me, bigger tanks mean bigger money and a lot more work. Unless you have a fish room and can really do it right and automate as much as possible for water changes.

I'm upgrading to a 55 soon. Many will immediately say, why don't I go bigger. Well, a 4 ft tank will max out the space I have and it's all I want to deal with right now as far as my routine is concerned.

Then you get back into the money aspect of it. I'm going to DIY a sump/fuge, need a new skimmer, new light set up and canopy. Basically, another quick grand out the window for a minor upgrade. That's if I don't want anymore liverock or livestock.
Maybe someday I can get a new house, get my final large tank, do it right and be done with it. Right now isn't that day for me.

So it's up to you. There really isn't a right or wrong answer but the bigger the better, when it comes down to it.

yeah your right it is my choice but it's still not easy. but if i were you i'd go to a 75 it's still in our four foot requirement and its the same height only it's wider which is optimal for reefs but it is up to you.thanks for the help

Sorry, I knew that my tank was agressive. I was just curious what you had that made your
take agressive? I know what I can put in with the lions as far as compatable fish etc. the panther grouper is the same size as
the lions and the marine betta is actually bigger then the lions and the panther.
Thank you though for being kind enough to try and warn me.

I was trying to show that you can have an agressive/reef tank, that is what my wife is slowly establishing.

just a thought, consider a 75g instead of the 55. the 75 is only on average 6" deeper but you gain a ton more floor space for corals
and life rock, if that is where you are headed.

I bought a 75g as my show tank for my reef, and I wish I would have gotten a 90g. Once again the same idea just a little bigger.

Yes someday I would like a 280g, but like you mentioned doing water changes etc. I am just not ready in this house we are in for that.

yeah sorry i came off as rude that was totally my fault i was just frustrated cause my computer was being really slow i overloaded the hard drive and was just in a very annoyed state sorry about that and thanks for letting me know you can do a reef and a aggressive tank. as far as the grouper goes it will grow really fast and with all those fish in that small of a tank your going to want to watch those nitrites and ammonias like a hawk that is how i killed my last reef tank well at least that is most of what i blame it on. (probably my laziness in actuality.) so out of curiosoity how big are your wifes fish i wish you the best of luck for your tank.

It's ok... The lion fish are about 6-7 inches, the grouper is 4-5 and the marine betta that we will add is about 9.

My wife runs an at home day care so she tends her tank daily, all should be well. Or at least we hope.

See I am using her tank as an excuse to get the 280g that I want.
Gee hun that 40 is a lil small, maybe it is time to give you my 75g and upgrade the show tank :)
