When I bought my 55 gallon in july of 06 I bought it from a friend. He said that it was a 55 gallon. I have never really looked at the tank and thought about the size but I took the dimensions and saw that the math said it was only 48.6 gallons. I am pretty sure they do not make any tanks with .00 in them. The dimensions I have are 47.50length 12width 18height. Just wondering how many gallons my tank actually is. thanks for the help

thats a standard 55g.(are those outside dimensions?)

yes.... they are outside dimensions....I know it says to measure inside but would it make that big of a difference?

looks like a 55 to me and really if you take sand and rock you actually only prob have 40 gal of water.

manufactures calculate the size of a tank using the outside. kinda like motorcycles selling as a 250cc class and they actually only have 246cc etc.

Your tank is actually about 45 gallons, using the measurments you gave us. (47.5 x 12 x 18=10260 10260/231= ~45gallons

Your friend isn't trying to con you though... that's the industry standard 55G long.
