Losing colors???

Just noticed that my purple hornets have almost become translucent. Also noticed that a large mushroom that was green and brown has become translucent with some green. Also have zoas that were green center with a dark brown skirt. The dark brown has now become a very light brown.

What is causing this? All my other corals still look good and have very good color.

Calc- 400
Salinity 1.025
Alk 9
mag 1100

I am wondering if it time to change my mh bulbs. It is going on 9 months with this set.

That's what mine did whem I dropped the alk 2 part bottle into sump and swung my alk up way to quick. Went from 8 to 11 in ten minutes. Took a few months but colors are coming back. Mags a touch low which could be letting alk swing. What are you dosing and how frequently?

I dose 2 part from BRS. 175g tank I dose once a day 150 ml. I have been doing this for the last 8 months and everything has been doing well.

I am wondering if it is time to change the mh bulbs it has been 8 months,

That magnesium is still a little on the low side, as noted by brian. You really want to shoot for 1200 at the minimum, and 1300 would be even better. Do you have leathers and many different types of coral in your tank? It could be caused by chemical warfare.

I have everything from leathers to sps and zoas. Everything has been doing great up until couple days ago. Just not sure, I was away for 4 days so I am not sure if my Dad followed my directions to a T.

How often do you change light bulbs? Wondering if it is time to do so after 8 months

Paul changes his every 2 years. The rest of us try to get to them once every 9-12 months. It shouldn't be so significant that you're noticing a sudden change. How often do you change your carbon and/or do water changes?

I was going to chime in when he said 9 months but you beat me to it...:frog:

For the record, I noticed a color shift at 30 months.....:crazy1:

i would just raise your magnesium to 1350 and let them go for awhile.....just dont raise it all at once...stretch it out over a few days...... it might be alowing a alk swing that might what is affecting them.....alot of times if your bulbs looses its spectrum from being to old you would see algea growth...it try and change mine every 12 months
