Loss

Have a big problem with loss of my ocellaris larve the first 3 days. From the last hatch only 5 are alive at day 5 and that was a big hatch! The only difference I can see from last time I hade succes is that the tank now stands in another room with sun light. Am using black plastic bags to cover 3 of the sides of the tank. Most of the larvea was standing near or at one of the sides. Had a lot of rotifers and not to much current, maybe a litte on the low side. Can the light that maybe came in from the sides and back of the tank be the explanation? To little current and oxygen? Thankfull for advice

that was a big hatch!

Bigger than the one(s) you've had success with? I had to make some changes as my pair produced bigger and bigger nests, what used to work for 50 larvae didn't work for 200. Mostly I had to increase the air and step up the water changes.

I dont now how big it was, but there were lot of larvae, more than 200. Maby not so smart to use an airstone for circulationas I did?

How was the ammonia and what was your water change schedule the first 5 days? I learned the hard way to be a bit aggressive on water changes days 3 through 7 - 20% whether it's needed or not. (Wilkerson's advice, which I'll admit I ignored the first time.)

Only 20 left on day 3 so I sort of gave up. Last time when I had sucesse I changed water every day, 10% from day 1 and 20 % from day 3. This time I followed Wilkerson andHoff and planed to wait untill day 3 whit water change. My ammonia test kit was empty by an accident ( wasent closed.. not smart) shops closed and Ididnt test.

I didn't have good yeilds with my first several batches. I did in my first hatch with ammonia on day 5. I now have 3 remaining from the second hatch and 12 from the third.

However, with my most recent hatch I caught 80-100 and have had very few losses. They're currently 12 days old. My problem (aside from the ammonia initially is that my larvae are very thin. Since I was new to it and not knowing what to look for, I didn't realize that was my problem initially. When hatched they're very transparent and only their eyes are the only prominent body part, so they apparently have very little yolk sack left. I'm working on the parents' nutitrition, but until I get healthier larvae, I'm doing what Joyce W suggests - feeding with rotifers immediately (don't wait 'til morning) and leave the light on 24 hours/day for the first 3 days. That might help in your case, hard to say.

Formula One 1-2 timespr day, maybe not good enough? Will try to feed more an mor variable food. Can not take next hatch because of jobb, have to travel a week far north, but after that.. My best result some years ago was over hundred juveniles from asingle hatch. Very dissapointing not to succeed now. Had to stop breeding because i didnt get rid of all the clowns, small market her.
