Lost another fish to SEIO

Hi y'all,

I just came home and found my cute little yellow tang stuck to the intake of my SEIO 1100. This is a second fish I lost to my SEIO.

My slender fish (mainly yellow stripe cardinals and blue eye cardinals) have no problem swimming right next to either one of two SEIO pumps. It's the deep bodied ones I have trouble with. First it was my rabbitfish and now my tang. They must have been eating caulerpa nearby.

I wonder if I can somehow prevent this sad thing to happen. Any idea besides getting a really big fish to fight against the strong pull of the pump? I really need to get caulerpa out of my tank.

Wow, Tomoko, sorry for your loss.
I've got a Seio 1100 in my 40g now. No problems so far, and all the fish in that tank are fairly small. What configuration are you using to mount the Seio?
BTW, did that leather frag make it?

That stinks! I found one of my clowns stuck to the bottom of a maxijet 600 one time, but that was b/c the strainer came off. I have, on the other hand, found my anemone stuck in my SEIO 620 two times! The only thing showing was his foot stretched way down to the closest rock. He's doing fine though.

Was the fish doing well? I haven't found that the pull of my SEIO 1100 is strong enough to pull any fish onto it.

Hi y'all,

Thank you for all the input. I guess I have to train my big yellow fox face rabbit to eat green stuff. He is so picky. He eats only red algae. He cleaned up every red thing including hard-to-erradicate red bubble aglae like alga.

I have my SEIO configured like a TUNZE (without a shroud.)
Your leather frag is very pretty. Really bright neon green :) It is bound to a reef plug with a rubber band. It seems to be sulking a bit and not inflating to its original size, but I think it will be fine.

The yellow tang was doing very well in my QT tank, eating well and very alart. He was so small (a silver dollar size.) He must have gotten very close to the intake. Possibly trying to pick off a stem of caulerpa caught on the narrow slits. My other rabbit was fine until he runs out of all caulerpa and tried to pick off the big piece (which I dropped it into the tank for him) that was caught on the slits.

That sounds crazy. I have mine mounted like a tunze " the 1500's and the suction does not seem strong enough to get a fish. I have never heard of a seio getting a fish. But like you said, I guess if the fish was small enough and was attempting to get food caught inside then I imagine its feasible. Most powerheads are anemone magnets if you have one that is always on the move. There is a cool mod somewhere on here for hanging and another mod where you can use the housing the seio's came with for extra protection. The hanging mod works well and eliminates the need for the suction cups. If you get a vortex that sucks in air throw a piece of electrical/gardening tape over the top, works well.

Had the same problem, and solved it about a year ago after losing a purple tang. I used a PVC slip-slip coupler, can't remember the exact size, but the ID is slightly smaller than the OD of the Seio. Cut a piece about 3/4" off so you now have a ring of PVC. Then, cut a slit in the ring to form a "split ring" which will slip over the Seio. Put it just in front of the inlet slits and it will form a gap between the fish's body and the intakes if it gets too close, preventing it from getting stuck to the side of the Seio. HTH, I couldn't find a picture.

Thank you, Dave! I will look into it. It sounds like a real good idea.

The rose mille I picked up from you at the Nashville frag swap is growing very well and turning lovely pink :) The other acro frag is trying to show some blue but it is remaining mostly a lavender color. I moved it to a spot a bit closer to the light. Hopefully it will color up a bit more.

Great Idea Dave! I really love the cool stuff I learn on here. I suppose you could design the slip as well to reduce the chance of an anenome getting caught.
