LOTR's

I have a few questions and I hope this is not against forum rules. First off why are they called that? Lord of the rings? Are they supposed to be like sauron's eye or something? Even just admitting I know that makes me feel kind of geeky but I guess this post pretty much took care of that. Anyway, also how rare are they? How much are they usually worth like each polyp? Can some people post pics of there's? Thanks.
