Well for $50, it would be a lot cheaper than buying a new tank to use as a sump. You're right, I don't really need the stand or hood - but with a brand new 30g costing $100 - it seems like a good deal!
Is there a problem with it being a little deeper than a standard sump? Understand, I know zero about sumps!

It's going to give you less room to get into the top of it while you are reaching under your stand. A 30 gallon, IMO, will work much better for a sump. I had a 30 gallon under my 90 when I had it and it worked really well. Petco (I think) has $1 a gallon sale every so often FWIW. I'll be happy to sell it to you I just think you would be happier with a different size for a sump.

I have 2 29's under my 125. One is a Refugium and the other is a sump. I have a very hard time reaching anything in the refugium. The Sump is not as bad, but I custom built my stand not to have a floor on that side so the sump can sit directly on the floor ~4 inches lower than the fuge. I think there is 30" clearance under mine.

My cabinet is rather short - only 24 inches (top to bottom) inside. I'll swing by PetSmart tomorrow and take a look at the tanks there.
