The L makes a difference. My brother has the 75-300mm non L and it takes decent pictures, but nothing super amazing. It's still better than a point and shoot but when you compare the same picture taken with my L and then the picture taken with his, it's very obvious which has the better glass.
Plus, there are things like CA which you dont see near as much of with the L glass but on the cheaper lenses you do. My brother borrowed my zoom for a week, was taking pictures of the moon and stars then went to his 75-300 and did the same thing and they were all lined in purple on one side and just didnt look good.
All in all, if you can afford the L glass it's worth every penny.
