Loud mp40 help

I've been using an MP40 second gen for a couple years now with the classic controller. It works fine and still has plenty of flow ect. I've had a problem since I got it though and I'm at the point where I'm tired of it. The noise

I can handle the whirling sound it naturally makes ramping up and down. Even at 100%. Problem is. 3-4 times a day the dry side will start to just slip away from perfect alignment with the wet side and it starts to make a loud skipping/grinding noise. Best analogy I can think of is when you are using a cake batter mixer and run it along the side of the bowl. I will simply nudge it back to where it's lined up and it stops. But some hours later it'll slip again. Even if I have the cord tightly secured to where it has no downward movement, then it'll just drift laterally.

Am I missing some piece here? Does anyone else have an issue with that? I got it second hand so I don't know if there's maybe something that makes it stick to the glass or what. It's to the point I'm considering selling it

do you have the additional pad that goes in between the dry side and the glass? How thick is the glass?

1/2" glass. No extra pad. Just the wet side. It seems like a thin sheet of rubber would grip it well but not sure where to find something like that which is thin enough.
