There could be a difference here with what type of corals individuals are keeping.
I know one of my old reference books had different recommended Ca llevels for different Corals. I believe it gave 400+ppm for most SPS corals, 100 to 200 ppm for most Softies, and 200 to 300 for most LPS's.
I would think that Alk should be somewhat proportunate to the Calcium level.
