Lowering tank Water Level

I am running a 185g tank with a built-in overflow in the center (w/ 2 DIY dursos). The teeth in the overflow are probably approx 1 1/2" to 2" and the water level in the tank goes almost to the top of the teeth. Is there any easy solution to lowering the water level so that I gain approx an inch (I just picked up a wavebox and could use the extra space). I was thinking that the only way to do this was to lengthen the teeth some but didn't know if the durso's had any impact on the water level. I tried slowing down the output on the returns w/ a gate valve on the return pump but that didn't seem to do much.

Try making the openings between the teeth wider. This will allow more water to pass through unobstructed by the teeth. Careful though, it sounds like you have a high rate of return and doing what I suggest may contribute to "waterfall syndrome".

You can cut some of the teeth off from the overflow (every other one). The "con" will be that snails and small fish may be able to get your overflow. You may also want to dial back the return flow rate. That should help also. Good luck :)
