I also suggest the tavertine with the mesh pull of the backing and soak in water or boil and the glue will come right off, then you have a bunch of 1" tiles. dont make this harder than it needs to be.

What im looking to do is get a big tile piecs and cut it into like 6-8" squares for growing out colonies i purchased these travertine tiles 18"x18" and was wondering if these will work? I was wanted to find out if the fill they used to make them 1 solid piece on 1 side is ok or not.
The pics show both sides 1 is textured the other smooth with fill.

anything made of natural stone will work, they also give tiles at home depot pre cut 1'' x1''

I have used tiles they are really good for grow out!!
